How to Make a Bean Bag Toss Game
The bean bag toss is a simple, but popular game loved by kids. You need the right board and bean bag pieces to play this, which you can buy at any toy store. If you want to save some cash though, you can make this yourself. Constructing a bean bag toss game is easy if you know what to do.
The Bean Bag Toss Game Basics
The toss is composed of three elements: the players, the bean bags to be tossed and the board. The object of the game is for the players to stand at a certain distance away from the board and toss their pieces through a hole (or holes) in the board. It’s like a simplified version of hopscotch (Learn how to play hopscotch), but with a unique twist. Corresponding points are given to each hole and are given to the players every time they successfully get a through one. The winner is the one with the most points.
Making The Board
You can make a board using cardboard, but if you want it to be stronger, you can create one using a plywood. This is a pretty easy project , and you can ask the kids to help you out.
Materials:
- A large heavy 4 x 6′ cardboard or plywood piece (an old refrigerator carton is also okay)
- 3 yards of 1 inch wide plastic tape (any color of your choice)
- Box cutter (or a wood saw if you’re using plywood)
- Permanent markers
Procedure:
- Use the plastic tape to edge the cardboard or plywood, folding it so the tape is seen on both sides of your target.
- Use a box cutter or a wooden saw to cut out nine circles in the cardboard, using any random pattern. Three of these circles must be 10 inches in diameter, while the other three are 8 inches wide, and the remaining are 6 inches wide.
- Put plastic tape around the inside of the circles, making sure both the outside and inside are covered. This prevents your board from tearing up because of too much use.
- Decorate your board by using markers and drawing a few multi-colored circles around each of the cut circles.
- Get a black permanent marker, and set number of points for every target circle. The largest ones should be worth 10 points, while middle-sized circles are 15. The smallest ones must be 25 points.
- Add more decorations if you like. Finally, prop the target against the wall. There should still be room behind it, for the bean bags to go through.
Making The Bean Bag Pieces
Now you need to make the pieces that you’re going to throw against the board. It only takes a few scrap materials.
Materials:
- Fabric
- Marker
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Beads or dried beans
Procedure:
- Get the fabric and turn it around, so that back faces towards you. Use the ruler to draw two straight lines. Smaller bags are easier to toss, so make sure they’re not too big. Cut the squares.
- Sew the squares together. Using a sewing machine will make this task faster, but a needle and thread also works great. The back of the fabric must be on the outside. On one side of the square, leave a two-inch opening. (Tips on how to thread a sewing machine)
- Flip the bag, turning it inside out, so the fabric’s front is outside.
- Fill up your bag with beads or dried beans. Put in enough to stuff it, but make sure you don’t overfill, otherwise sewing it shut will be difficult.
- Sew the two-inch opening shut.
Buying a bean bag toss game is great, but since it’s composition is pretty easy, why not just make one at home? You’ll save money, and still get to set up a great game for the kids. Enjoy!
