How to Make Car Seat Covers
by Paul Posted on May 19th, 2009Car seats are made to be comfortable, providing the car’s occupants a smooth ride. The problem is, comfort and styling doesn’t always go with one another. The seats of old cars gradually wear out, even if they’re still comfortable to occupy. You need to make new car seat covers if you want to maintain the balance of looks and comfort. With some sewing skills and an eye for aesthetics, creating a set for your car shouldn’t be too hard.
Measure the Car Seats’ Dimensions
Before you purchase material for your car seats, you must know their measurements. Use a measuring tape to get the dimensions of the base, backrest, etc. Do the same for the backseat. Note the dimensions then estimate the size of the material to be purchased. If you’re skillful at creating designs, sketch the appearance of the covers. If not, use car magazines and the internet for reference.
Select the Material for the Car Seats
Think of a good seating material. Leather is not very comfortable, but it beats all the other materials in styling. Cotton, on the other hand, promotes comfort regardless of style. Remember, car seat covers are ideally stretchable, so they won’t get ripped or damaged through continuous use. Go to a fabric shop and purchase your chosen material along with the lining.
Putting the Fabric Together
Mark the fabric according to the seats’ dimensions. Cut out sheets to be used for the sections of the car seats as well as the lining. If you picked a stretchable material, the sheets should be a little smaller than the seats’ dimensions to produce a smooth fit. Sew the patterns you wish to apply, if there are any. Use a sewing machine to put the sheets together, forming the car seat covers.
Fitting the Car Seat Covers
See if the covers fit the seats, especially the tricky backseat. Make sure the covers are stretched, when worn on the seats, so they look neat. Otherwise, adjustments must be made.
All Worth Your Efforts
Creating car seat covers may be a bit tedious, but it’s okay. They last for years and years with proper maintenance, which makes the job worth all your efforts. Besides, with the comfort they provide, you can rest easy on them upon their creation. Hi,
great post! I’m thinking of trimming our car soon but wondered do you know of any pre made patterns available for certain makes of car? And if so where would be the best place to buy them.
Also if the design involves a quilting effect would there be a specific padding that would be used?
Thanks in advance
