How to Make a Foam Bat for a Car Antenna
by Paul Posted on May 13th, 2009The car antenna, when exposed, is pretty long, drawing attention from other cars and passers-by. Given this characteristic, you can enhance the antenna’s appearance by adding a cool ornament - the foam bat. It looks cute but with attitude, as it sways with every movement of the antenna. It also enhances the appearance of your car, giving a playfully edgy theme. Best of all, such a creation is not too hard to make. With some crafting foam, art materials and a glue gun, you can create a foam bat for your car antenna.
Materials Used:
- 30 x 30 inches black crafting foam
- scissors
- pencil
- 8/12 x 11 bond paper
- chalk
- paintbrush
- toy eyes
- glue gun and glue sticks
- glitter paint
- hole punch
- colored felt paper

Procedure:
- Sketch the bat’s outline on a sheet of bond paper. Make your design cute and edgy, so it goes along with the current urban trend used for graffiti art, which goes well with pretty much anything. Cut out strips of felt paper if you want to make cutesy impressions for your creation.
- Cut the bat’s outline and lay it on the black crafting foam.
- Trace the outline using the chalk.
- Cut the bat’s outline on the foam.
- Bore two holes on the foam, the first should be by the bat’s head and the other, right below the wings. The holes should be aligned, so the bat will hang straight from your car’s antenna. Make sure the holes have the right size. Ideally, the bat must be stable, as it sits near the tip of the antenna.
- On the bat’s head, glue the toy eyes. (Tips on how to use a glue gun properly)
- When the glue dries, apply glitter paint on the bat.
- Stick the colored strips of felt paper on the bat, when the paint dries.
- Set the foam bat onto the antenna through the two holes.

If you want a sturdier version of the foam bat, you can cover it with a thin layer of paper mache. Not only will it withstand strong gusts of wind, it also sets a macabre tone on your creation.
