How To Make An Identity Crisis Costume
by Paul Posted on March 18th, 2009The human mind contains so many ideas, especially for costumes. Before an upcoming costume party, settling for a costume comes as a problem, given the number of choices. You are usually stuck with two or three different costumes to choose from, each of them having its own kinks. Instead of forgoing your ideas, why not combine them? Mesh your costume ideas into one and you’ll grab everyone’s attention, particularly their funny bones. For formality’s sake, let’s just call those creations identity crisis costumes.
Multiple Personality Disorder - Party Style
An identity crisis costume is composed of various details coming from different ideas or costumes. The point is, your character is suffering from multiple personality disorder, so you will come dressed in all of your personae. To make things interesting, you should set a theme for your costume. Other people can then relate to it, which will make them appreciate your creation even more. You can categorize your costume’s theme using these ideas:
- metaphorical statement
- the politically correct
- simply schizophrenic
Themes other than these three are available. The trick is to find a link to your chosen costume ideas and you’ll instantly have a theme.
Metaphorical Statement
If you’re going to a party filled with artists and creative people, you can wow them by basing your costume on a metaphor or a simile. It can be a combination of symbols that capture an entire group, sect, cause, characteristic, or emotion. Since metaphors involve more than one party, you might as well integrate all the involved parties into your costume. Here are a few examples:
- The Sports Icon - Wear a basketball jersey along with a football helmet, baseball mitt, and swimming trunks, hockey stick and a pair of ice skates.
- Honor - Wear a cadet’s outfit. Create a craft-based bald eagle and affix it on your left arm. Hold a nation’s flag on your right. Don’t forget to wear Captain America’s mask.
The Politically Correct
People tend to generalize groups and brand them with sweeping generalizations. If you’re politically correct, you will extract the specifics and make them obvious, say make them all appear in a single costume. Remember, every detail should be taken literally. Here are two examples:
- Batman - Put on a scary human bat costume. Once done, wear stylish formal clothing and talk in a very classy manner. Create an opening on the bat costume’s lips, so you can eat caviar, sip champagne and talk about the Superbowl.
- Chairman of the Board - Wear formal clothes (see The Guide To Tuxedo Formal Wear) and sit on a wheelchair, holding a tiny blackboard and some chalk. Have some of your friends dress up as wooden boards. They will carry around the party area, as you bark orders loudly.
Simply Schizophrenic
If you don’t have time to think of a theme, just wear random stuff that you can find in your home, the weirder, the better. Your only mission is to make other people laugh as they scratch their heads. Here are three examples:
- Astronaut’s outfit (opened helmet), cane, cigar, swimmer’s goggles
- tuxedo, slacks, sunglasses, dancing pole, kinky underwear worn outside.
- 50 nametags with 50 different identities/names, an everchanging persona, everchanging voice, changes clothes every half hour
Smorgasbord of Weird Details
The identity crisis costume, silly as it may seem, comes as a convenient option when you can’t think of a costume to wear. It is also a fresh concept that will surely make heads turn and perhaps bag “Best in Costume” awards. If you’re going to halloween, why not try these Unusual and snazzy halloween costume ideas.
