How To Make A Pippi Longstockings Costume
by Paul Posted on March 9th, 2009Pippi Longstocking is a strong assertive character well-loved by kids. She, known for outsmarting foolish adults, lives by her sense of justice, which serves as an example for children. Naturally, any kid wants to fill the shoes of such an interesting character. Perhaps the closest way possible is to make a costume fashioned after the young heroine.
Pippi Longstocking at a Glance
When making a Pippi Longstockings costume, think of it as several wardrobes put together to create a spunky ragged outfit. Longstocking wears an assortment of outfits but she is best known for her blue denim jumper worn over a red long-sleeved dress. She dons long socks with mismatched patterns and a pair of black boots. Other characteristics that you should remember are her freckles and her funky red hairdo. After taking note of those details, you can start making your very own Pippi Longstockings costume.
Materials Used:
- blue denim jumper
- red long sleeved dress
- 2 pairs of striped socks (different patterns and colors)
- black boots
- red eyeliner/marker
- hanger
- hairpins
- hairpiece
- orange hairspray
- flower design patches (optional)
- square patches with different colors (optional)
- sewing kit (optional)
Procedure:
- Wear the red long sleeved dress first. It should look a bit rugged, given Longstocking’s humble fashion sense.
- Above it, wear the blue denim jumper. You can sew flower designs and oddly-colored patches throughout the jumper to stay close to Longstocking’s actual appearance.
- Wear the striped socks. Remember, they should have different patterns.
- Affix the hairpiece then the hanger on your head by braiding them using your hair. Make sure that the hanger is covered by hair, so it won’t be visible. The resulting hairdo should have two well-separated braids that remain perpetually steady. (Learn how to braid hair)
- Spray orange hairspray on your hair, the head piece and the hanger.
When the hairspray dries, your Pippi Longstockings costume is complete (If you want other uses of hairspray, read 18 hair-raising uses for hairspray). Proceed to the mirror and see how it looks. Feel free to add your own designs, if you want a personal touch on the outfit. You’ll surely be a hit in any costume party. You can even stay in character, as you act as if you were Pippi Longstocking, yourself.
