Gypsies, believed to have mystical powers, are viewed as individuals surrounded with grace and mystery. Their appearance is rather eye-catching, with the colors and the patterns found on their clothing. As expected, they exude a mystical charm that appeals to many, especially when their outfits are coupled with Egyptian or belly dancing. You can actually display the same appeal if you know how to create a gypsy costume. Intricate as it may look, it is not really hard to create. (For more information regarding gypsies, read The Guide To Gypsy)

Lavish, Mysterious and Sexy

a gypsy costumeThe best description for gypsy costumes is, they are lavish, mysterious and sexy. With a generally loose fit, the costumes highlight a woman’s movement, and sometimes including her figure. The top can come as a lacy ruffled blouse or a beaded bra top for belly dancers. As for the bottom, a long and flowing skirt, with a striking color or sometimes filled with beaded patterns, is worn. Some wear an overskirt to highlight more elegance ot the costume. Bracelets, necklaces, scarves and other beaded accessories are often included.

The Gypsy Fabric Puzzle

You, instead of sewing the costume from scratch, can just match the stuff that you have until you form a combination worthy of the title “gypsy.” If you have any missing items, you can purchase them from a retail store or stitch them up, depending on your materials and sewing prowess. The tricky part is, choosing the components of your costume. Gypsy costumes play with various colors and patterns, which means a wrong color combination will make your costume an eyesore. Remember, the careful evaluation of colors, patterns and accessories is essential.

The Standard Gypsy Costume

A standard gypsy costume focuses more on elegance and grace rather than sexiness. Ideally, the top is loose and the bottom is double-layered. You can wear a vest over your top, which adds lavishness to your costume. Wear lots of jewelry and a large stylish belt to push the envelope on elegance. When everything has been assembled, you may actually pass off for a real gypsy.

Materials Used:

    a gypsy costume

  • white ruffled top
  • long and flowing skirt
  • layered necklace with a large pendant
  • long beaded bracelets
  • hoop earrings
  • stockings
  • black stiletto knee high boots
  • 2 scarves
  • makeup
  • anklets
  • overskirt
  • shawl (optional)
  • vest (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Wear a long skirt either with an unusual bright color like light purple, orange and bright red, or bright colorful patterns. Remember, it is the element of your wardrobe that should stand out. Wear an equally colorful overskirt with a hue that matches the long skirt’s color.
  2. Pick a white ruffled top. An off shoulder one is perfect, since it exudes both sexiness and grace. Its contours match the look and skirt’s flow, when moving. You can wear a vest with colorful intricate patterns, since it compliments white’s neutrality and the skirt’s adventurous look.
  3. Tie a scarf on your head and check if it suits your wardrobe. Remove it if it clashes with your top and skirt. In its place, wear a colorful shawl on your shoulder. You can wear both if they look good.
  4. Tie the other scarf around your waist, as if you were wearing a belt.
  5. Pick a layered necklace with large beads and a prominent pendant. The larger the beads, the better.
  6. Wear bracelets and anklets that go well with the necklace’s appearance.
  7. Wear makeup in such a way that your facial features are well accentuated (Learn how to apply make up). Apply fiery red lipstick.
  8. Put on a pair of dark stockings, giving a tinge of mystery to your look.
  9. Once done, wear a pair of black knee-high stiletto boots. It looks sexy and matches many types of wardrobes, making it a superb choice.
  10. Finish your costume by wearing large hoop earrings.

The centerpiece of your costume is the skirt, so choosing one can be challenging. If you can’t find one that can carry your wardrobe’s style, feel free to make your own skirt. Textile stores sell fabrics with tons of colors and patterns. You can even piece up the patterns from different fabrics if you choose.

The Gypsy Belly Dancing Costume

Belly dancers are known for their sexy well-defined abdomens and curvaceous figures. If you happen to have the same physique, why not flaunt it for everyone to see? For your top, you will have to wear only a beaded bra, which makes your figure a formal part of the costume.

Materials Used:

    a gypsy costume

  • elegant-looking bra top
  • long and flowing skirt
  • large belt with sequins, golden chains or beads
  • sandals with patterned straps
  • bracelets
  • layered necklace with a prominent pendant
  • anklets
  • makeup
  • headpiece
  • veil (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Pick or purchase an elegant-looking bra, preferably with sequins, coins, gold chains between both cups. The color and style of the bra is important, since the rest of the costume should provide either match the bra or provide a nice contrast.
  2. Pick a long and flowing skirt that is similar or contrasting to the bra’s appearance. A partially transparent skirt with beads and golden patterns near the bottom will look stellar.
  3. Wear a gold layered necklace that has a large pendant.
  4. Once done, put on a belt with patterned straps. Make sure that it is lavishly designed.
  5. Wear golden bracelets, anklets armbands, a headpiece and other jewelry.
  6. Put on a pair of sandals with well-patterned straps. Ideally, the patterns should go well with the ones found on the skirt and bra.
  7. Put on makeup that will highlight your facial features. A blood red lipstick is a must, since it exudes much sexiness.
  8. Check your appearance in front of a mirror. If you feel that you don’t look like a mysterious seductress, wear a transparent veil.

The belly dancing gypsy costume is by all means a sultry and glamorous wardrobe. With a piercing stare and graceful movements, getting the attention of the male populace shouldn’t be a problem. Better learn up on your belly dancing moves, or at least your gestures and gyrations.

Beauty Through Fabric and Motion

The gypsy, nomadic in nature, travels from one place to another, showing the world how beauty is exuded through motion and fabric. Given that detail, you can accentuate your own beauty by wearing a well-arranged gypsy costume. Put together an ensemble of grand-looking clothes and accessories then you’ll certainly be the belle of the ball.
