Themed cakes look awfully nice, but at some point, you ‘ll get tired of the sweetness and the icing. Instead of of focusing on the edible part, which you can get from other dessert items, just up the ante of the cake’s appearance. You can use unconventional items to give the fixture a balance of stylishness and novelty. A good starting point is the diaper cake.

The diaper cake, being a popular item for themed celebrations, is made from baby diapers arranged to look like an actual cake. Different types of objects are added to build a specific theme. For instance, a diaper cake for children’s parties may contain teddy bears and action figures. Creating one is fun, given the amount of ideas that you can apply. Just remind yourself not to take a bite, since diaper cakes aren’t edible.

Things to Remember:

Before proceeding with your creation, you must know some things on how the diaper cake is formed. The structure may not look right or stay erect if you miss any of these factors.

  • Use Rubber Bands to Temporarily Hold the Diapers - Diapers, when folded and arranged, tend to disengage, given their soft structure. So arranging a cake layer is virtually impossible, unless additional support is provided. You can use rubber bands to tie the folded diapers together until a layer is formed. The rubber band stiffens the diapers, making them stay erect.
  • Use Materials for Making Actual Cakes - Cake stands and pizza trays are essential items for making a diaper cake. They are used to shape and hold the structure while it is being formed. The tray even adds realism to your creation, since actual multi-layered cakes are never removed from their cake trays.
  • Remove Diapers Carefully when Placing Decorations - You can remove a few diapers to maintain the structure’s integrity, when adding decorations. Unless you’re applying a floral theme, randomly wedging items onto the layers may shake diapers’ alignment, causing the structure to look disfigured. The diapers should be removed one at a time, so the alignment is not disturbed.

By knowing these simple reminders, making a diaper cake shouldn’t be too hard. Just be patient when arranging the baby garments and you’ll breeze by the entire procedure.

Materials Used:

diaper cake

  • 2 packs of diapers, preferably small
  • cake stand and tray
  • 3 pieces of thick or fabric ribbon
  • 4 receiving blankets
  • 30 rubber bands
  • decorations

Procedure:

  1. Settle on the sizes of the cake layers. With the base as the thickest, the layers should decrease in width as you move up the cake.
  2. Fold and place a receiving blanket on the cake tray.
  3. Roll a diaper as tightly as possible then tie a rubber band around it.
  4. Do the same the for the next diaper then bundle it with the first diaper using the same rubber band.
  5. Repeat the process until the rubber band can’t fit anymore diapers. You can then move to the next rubber band after.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until you form the cake’s base layer.
  7. Tie the entire layer with thick ribbon.
  8. Cut the rubber bands.
  9. Fold a receiving blanket then place it on top of the base.
  10. Repeat steps 2 to 9 to form the diaper cake’s next two layers.
  11. One by one, remove some of the diapers and insert decorations.
  12. Place a striking cake topper on the cake’s topmost layer. It can be a stuffed toy, a fairly large action figure or any good looking object. Make sure the topper isn’t too heavy, or else your cake might crumble.

With diaper cake complete, bring it to an upcoming celebration and place it in a visible area. People will surely marvel at your creation’s intricacy and design. You can also bring an actual cake, so you can stimulate their appetites as well.

Low Cost, High on Aesthetics

The diaper cake is your low-cost option to highlight a celebration. Its production cost is only a fraction of an actual cake’s price, making it a cheap central ornament. Cheap things, as you probably know, are often associated substandard appearances. The diaper cake comes as one of the few exceptions to that rule.
