Giving flowers to a lover may be a tried and tested formula for affection, but surely giving something original is a bit more effective. You don’t really need to stray away from the thought of handing out blooms. Just present them in a different way and your lover will probably swoon. Try making a daisy chain. It may spark a scene reminiscent of valentines day, when you give it to your partner.

The daisy chain, as its name suggests, is composed of several daisies connected by the daisies’ stalks, a string, or both. It is often worn at the neck, but can be adjusted to form a flower bracelet or crown. To accentuate the beauty of the daisies, some people mix them with other flowers and small ornaments, creating a fine blend of colors. You can create a simple item or go for a lavish flower necklace, depending on your taste.

Picking Daisies

When picking daisies, you should select blooms of the same size and they must have sturdy stems. Your objective is to create an item that resembles an actual jewelry piece, identical beads and all. So the rule should also apply when picking other flowers, which highlight the chain’ s design. As for the stems, a daisy chain made from weak or damaged stalks simply won’t last. Checking the stems before deciding on a flower is a must.

Proper Stem Length

The standard size of the stems to be used is two inches, though you have the freedom to use any length that you wish. Using two-inch stems for a group of 25 daisies forms the regular length of a necklace. Just make the necessary adjustments in the stems’ length, if necessary.

On Adding Ornaments

Normally, a daisy chain is fine using the stems of the blooms. If you’re are adding necklace ornaments like beads and precious stones, you’re better off using a string. The stems can be tweaked to fit into the holes displayed by beads, but the process is quite tedious. You might end up destroying stems, which wastes a bunch of flowers. By using a string, the beads will easily fit. It can also be threaded through the daisies’ stalks.

Making the Daisy Chain

Making a daisy chain is not too hard. You should just be careful when handling the stalks, since they are pretty sensitive. A swift forceful gesture can rip them apart. Much threading is required, when connecting the stalks, so you should have steady hands.

Materials Used:

daisy chains

  • 25 daisies (with two-inch stems or longer)
  • needle
  • ruler
  • small flowers (optional)
  • string (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Select fine looking daisies with long and strong stems. You can either buy them from a flower shop or pick them from your garden.
  2. Measure 1/2 inch from the top of the stem of each flower then prick it with a needle. Make the hole large enough for one stalk to fit.
  3. Thread the the stem of the flowers together until you form a good sized chain. If you want to have additional designs, you can tie the stems of other flowers to the chain. Poppies and pansies are good supporting flowers.
  4. Knot the ends of the chain together. If the connection is not tight enough, use string to tie the ends together.

If you are not particularly a fan of daisies, you can use other flowers for the chain. As long as your chosen blossom has a flexible and sturdy stem, it can be used to create a flower necklace, bracelet or crown. Just follow the same procedure for making the daisy chain.

Compact Daisy Chain

For people who want a more compact item, you can create a wreath-like version of the daisy chain. The process is fairly simple. You will need to tie the blossoms together using a piece of string and some prowess in threading. If you are adept at sewing, you will have no problems creating the flower jewelry piece.

Materials Used:

daisy chains

  • about 50 daisies
  • string
  • needle
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • jewelry clasp
  • poppies and pansies (optional)
  • rubber bands (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Gather about 50 daisies in your garden or purchase them from a florist.
  2. Cut the stems down to one inch.
  3. Pierce a hole near the bottom of each stem. Make sure that the string can fit through the holes.
  4. Insert the string through the holes until you form a compact chain. You can also add poppies and pansies in-between each daisy for a lovely variation.
  5. Affix a jewelry clasp at the ends of the string. Check if the chain holds up. You can tie the stems with rubber bands to reinforce the chain’s frame.

The compact daisy chain can be worn by both men and women. It goes well with floral-themed shirts and dresses. You can also wear it with a bikini - sarong combo for a natural, elegant look. Clearly, the compact chain is a cool accessory for the summer getaway.

A daisy chain is a cute accessory that every girl should try to make at home, especially for those who have a tight budget. If you’ve got some dough to spare though, you may want to experiment even further by dabbling into beading.
