Do you have too many t-shirts in your closet? You, given the ever-changing fashion trends, might not be wearing some of them anymore. Give life to some of your old shirts by tweaking them to form other types of clothing. One of your best options is to transform your unused t-shirts into skirts.

A t-shirt skirt is edgy, bearing a good combination of creativity and novelty. You can wear it to the mall or even to a hip joint like a night club. The casual look of the garment is quite popular with teens and young adults, which makes it a must-have, if you’re in the party scene. With a well-designed shirt, sewing equipment and some sewing prowess, you can create a stylish t-shirt skirt.

The Single Shirt Skirt

The single shirt skirt is the t-shirt skirt’s basic design. It is a popular choice for youngsters, since you can simply create one, the moment an item in your closet catches your attention. The procedure is pretty straightforward, so you should not have any trouble making the skirt. If you own a sewing machine, you can probably stitch together a skirt in less than an hour.

Materials Used:

  • t-shirt, preferably with a printed design
  • scissors
  • marker
  • sewing needle
  • sewing thread
  • pins
  • yardstick
  • ribbon or long shoestring
  • sewing machine (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Pick a t-shirt with a nice print in your closet.
  2. Cut the shirt across, an inch below the print, creating two halves. The top half should contain the t-shirt’s print.
  3. Once done, turn the bottom half upside down then position it above the top half.
  4. With both halves lined up, mark a straight line along the outside edge of both sides. The line represents your skirt’s width.
  5. Cut through the markings you made, which includes the sleeves and probably a portion of the sides. Check the sides. Make sure that they are straight.
  6. Turn the top half (the half with the printed design) inside out.
  7. Stitch its sides shut.
  8. Cut the potions beside the collar, opening the sheet’s top portion.
  9. Insert the bottom half in the opening, just beyond the collar.
  10. Use a set of pins to connect both halves. This shows you a preview of the finished product. You can cut off the top regions, if you find the skirt too long.
  11. With both halves pinned, stitch them together, near the location of the pins.
  12. Get two ribbon pieces or shoestrings that are a few inches longer than the skirt’s width. Position the strings on the skirt’s topmost portion. They should be one half-inch apart or less.
  13. Enclose the strings with the skin’s top portion.
  14. Stitch a hemline right below the first string then make a second one beneath the second string.

If you find the strings too tacky, you can make an incision at the skirt’s top-middle portion then affix a zipper and a button. Add designs like patches or sewn patterns to give your skirt more attitude. You can even change the cut of your skirt, once you get tired of its appearance.

The Patch-Based T-Shirt Skirt

For people who have a good number of used shirts to spare, you can create a fine skirt out of several t-shirts. The skirt, composed of several base items, is pretty durable and has many options for styling. You can mix and match shirts for intricate patterns or display a constant design. Just dabble with your creativity and you’ll be able to construct a thing of beauty.

Materials Used:

  • 4 or more t-shirts
  • scissors
  • set of pins
  • pen/marker
  • sewing needle
  • sewing thread
  • measuring tape
  • sewing machine (optional)
  • paper (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Pick a small shirt in your closet. Wrap it around your waist and see how it fits. If it is loose, you can shorten the sleeves until it forms a perfect fit.
  2. From the top of the shirt, measure 4-inches. Mark it with a horizontal line spanning the shirt’s width.
  3. Cut along the line and keep the top portion. It will be your skirt’s waistband.
  4. Think of a good pattern for your skirt, based on the t-shirts on your closet. You can sketch the pattern on a piece of paper, so you’ll have a point of reference.
  5. Decide on the length of your skirt.
  6. Once you have settled on a pattern, get the corresponding shirts from your closet.
  7. Cut off the sleeves and the collars of the shirts.
  8. Mark a half-inch border for prints. Cut out the borders to create the skirt’s design patches. As for patterned fabrics, you have the liberty to use any dimension, as long as they look good when combined with the prints.
  9. Assemble and pin the patches together until you form the skirt.
  10. Cut any excess fabric to straighten the skirt’s bottom edge.
  11. Stitch the patches together using your sewing equipment. Place the stitches on the borders, for the patches with prints.
  12. When all the patches have been attached, position the waistband on your skirt’s topmost portion. Adjust its size, if necessary.
  13. Stitch the waistband to your skirt.
  14. Make one or two hemlines on the waistband to reinforce the connection.

This skirt goes well with plain-colored tops, adding an intricate symmetry to your wardrobe. It is a good choice for night outs and artsy-fartsy events. The combination of patterns produces a balance of sophistication and sexiness, which every woman will adore.
