How To Make A Hovercraft
Ever wanted to get one of those nifty hovercrafts you see on TV? Well, now you can actually make your own! Just read on for how.
Materials Needed
- Plywood
- Leaf blower, or any canister-type vacuum that has a blower outlet
- Measuring tape
- Electric wood cutter
- Plastic wrap
- Screws
- Plastic top
- Staple gun
Step by Step Procedure
Step 1
Your hovercraft will need a base. A piece of plywood will do nicely. You can opt to make it into whatever shape you want, but for this guide, it’ll be a circle.

Step 2
Find the center so you can determine where to draw the circle. The center is also where you will fasten the plastic top and line up the plastic skirt.

Step 3
Once you’ve made your circle shape, cut it using the wood cutter or saw. You will now have your platform.

Step 4
Cut out a plastic wrap as your hovercraft’s air cushion. In order to secure it to the base, use a screw and a plastic top.

Step 5
Cut some holes around the plastic. These will serve as the vent holes. Also, cut the plastic wrap in a circle about six inches larger than the plywood base.

Step 6
Attach the plastic to the wood using a staple gun. Then, inflate it. If there’s any leak, cover it with duct tape.

Step 7
Cut a hole in the plywood base, about 1 foot from the edge. This is where the leaf blower hose will go to. Power up the blower (or the vacuum) and you’re good to go.

The hovercraft will make for a good science project, or just a nifty vehicle you can ride on. Experiment with it and add modifications. Either way, it will add up for good fun.
