How To Make A Foxhole Radio
by howtomakestuff Posted on November 25th, 2008Materials Needed
- Toilet Paper Tube
- Safety Pin
- Razor Blade
- A Bunch of Thumb Tacks
- Magnet Wire
- A Wooden Board to Put It All On/li>
- wire For Ground and Antenna
Step by Step Procedure
Step 1
Wind the magnet wire around the toilet paper tube by hand 120 times. You can attach it with tape before you wind it up or put a hole in it and tie it on. That will keep it from slipping as you wind it up.

Step 2
Use Paper Clips and Thumbtacks to put everything together according to the schematic. Your detector should have a cat whisker and a razor blade. For that, you have a safety pin and some pencil lead. Hook the magnetic wire both to the antenna and the ground and hook it up to some earphones like you see below.

Step 3
Make sure you ‘blue’ the razor blade by exposing it to extreme heat with a blowtorch or another heating item.
|
Step 4
Position yourself by the window so your antenna can go out the window and you can hook up your ground wire to a radiator to serve as your ground. Take the cat whisker and adjust it. Through the earphones, you can now listen in to the radio.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It was really rimple to understand. Is there a way to make your own earphone to go with it. I assume if during WW2 if there was a need to make your own radio then headphones couldn’t have been in abundance either. Would there have been a way to make a simple headphone or speacker of some type?
