The Christmas season is marked by snow and the woody theme displayed by most homes. Next to the Christmas tree, the Christmas wreath is a figurehead for the holiday season’s perennial theme. The wreath’s woody boughs exude a natural beauty that goes well with most homes. Its band of adornments make the ornamental ring stand out from regular home decorations. You can create your own Christmas wreath as you share the spirit of Christmas through the ornament’s wonderful design.

Styles of Wreaths

Wreaths are made from a wide array of materials. Popular items for wreaths are flowers, acorns, evergreen, twigs and vines. You can evaluate your home’s theme and choose among the following wreath styles, depending on which suits your home the best.

  • Pine Cone Wreath
  • Acorn Wreath
  • Grapevine Wreath
  • Autumn Leaves Wreath
  • Pretzel Wreath
  • Christmas Lights Wreath
  • Candle Wreath
  • Feather Wreath
  • Garden Hose Wreath

Each style sports its own aesthetic flavor. You can create more than one design, especially if the rooms of your house have different themes. Just hang the most appropriate wreath styles on the doors of every room.

Pine Cone Wreath

The pine cone wreath is one of the most popular styles for wreaths. Its design fits most household themes. Most catholic countries around the world, even those that don’t really grow pine cones, hang pine cone wreaths during Christmas.

Materials Used:

  • evergreen wreath base
  • pine cones
  • chestnuts
  • acorns and other tiny ornaments
  • 1 yard of ribbon string
  • glue sticks
  • glue gun
  • spray paint
  • nylon string
  • 2 thumbtacks
  • hook

Procedure:

  • Purchase the materials from craft stores and shops for Christmas decorations.
  • Think of a pattern for your wreath. You can prearrange the pine cones and other ornaments on your wreath to compare patterns. Make your selection carefully because once the materials have been glued, removing them will damage the wreath base.
  • When you have finalized the pattern, use your glue gun to attach the pine cones, acorns and other ornaments to the base.
  • Wrap portions of the base with a piece of ribbon string.
  • Glue the string to the base to reinforce its connection.
  • When the glue dries, apply spray paint to the wreath. You can color your wreath with gold or white paint, if you want to give it a different look.
  • Affix the nylon string at the back of the wreath with a couple of thumbtacks.
  • Set the hook on a door then hang the wreath.
  • Acorn Wreath

Just like the pine cone wreath, the acorn wreath has a versatile design. It serves as a good Christmas wreath and at the same time, it can be used as symbols for Thanksgiving and the autumn season. It is often hung in or near the dining area.

    Materials Used:

    • acorns
    • wicker or straw wreath base
    • ribbon string
    • tiny ribbons
    • brown and red autumn leaves
    • plastic cherries
    • dried flowers
    • glue gun
    • glue sticks
    • nylon string
    • 2 thumbtacks
    • hook

    Procedure:

  • Purchase the materials from a craft store, a hardware store, and a shop for Christmas decorations.
  • Set the leaves, flowers, ribbons, plastic cherries and acorns on the wreath base until you come up with a good pattern.
  • Use your glue gun and glue sticks to attach the arrangement to the base.
  • Once the glue dries, attach the nylon string at the back of your wreath using thumbtacks.
  • Bore a tiny hole on your door, then affix the hook.
  • Hang your wreath on the hook.
  • Grapevine Wreath

The creation procedure of the grapevine wreath resembles that of its acorn-based counterpart. The only difference is, you have to cover the entire base with green plastic leaves, instead of the red and brown autumn leaves used for acorn wreaths. Feel free to experiment with the designs until you find a good pattern.

    Autumn Leaves Wreath

The autumn leaves wreath is one of the easiest to create among the wreath styles. You simply have to affix the red leaves throughout the base, then strategically place artificial berries. No specific wreath base is required. If your house bears a ‘White Christmas’ theme, you can use white artificial leaves instead of the red ones.

    Pretzel Wreath

The pretzel wreath is a pleasantly unique item. Its wreath base is made of plain or chocolate covered pretzels. You should be selective with your designs, when making this type of wreath. The edible base may have problems carrying heavy items and arrangements. Of course, you also have with the temptation of munching on the pretzels while creating the wreath.

    Materials Used:

    • 42 cooked pretzels
    • large red ribbon
    • 7 candy-covered chocolates
    • wood glue/all-purpose glue
    • glue gun
    • glue sticks
    • hook
    • nylon string (optional)
    • 2 thumbtacks (optional)
    • other tiny decorations (optional)

    Procedure:

  • Arrange the pretzels in three rows to form one circle. The wreath base should have a total of fourteen rows.
  • Use all-purpose glue or wood glue to hold the pretzels together. Ideally, the upper two-thirds of each pretzel should be covered with glue to ensure that the base’s foundation will hold up.
  • When the glue dries, attach the large red ribbon at the top middle portion of the base using your glue gun and glue sticks.
  • Arrange the candy-covered chocolates around the base to form a downward arc. Use your glue gun to affix them to the wreath. If you find the design too plain, you can place additional ornaments such as bells, berries or miniature gifts. Attach the additional items with your glue gun.
  • Affix a hook on the wall or the door.
  • Hang the wreath on the hook. You can also thumbtack a piece of nylon string at the back of the wreath, which will be used to hang the yummy ornament to the hook.
  • Christmas Lights Wreath

A Christmas tree alone is beautiful enough to act as the centerpiece of any Christmas theme. Wrap it with Christmas lights and the tree will look even grander. Remarkably, this enhancing effect of the lights also works well with wreaths.

    Materials Used:

    • Evergreen wreath base or artificial evergreen leaves
    • Christmas lights
    • florist wire
    • tiny glistening ornaments (bells, shiny boxes, small ribbons, etc)
    • large red ribbon
    • glue gun
    • glue sticks
    • hook

    Procedure:

  • You have the option to purchase a ready-made wreath base or assemble your own base using artificial evergreen leaves and your glue gun.
  • Entwine the Christmas lights with the florist wire.
  • With the base ready, twirl the lights and the wire around the wreath. Consider the spacing of the twirls. Make sure that they’re evenly placed so that the wreath will look good when the lights are powered.
  • At the bottom-middle portion of the wreath, affix the large red ribbon using the glue gun.
  • Use the glue gun to attach the tiny ornaments around the base.
  • Setup the hook on a wall or door, then hang the wreath.
  • Candle Wreath

The candle wreath is perhaps the most beautiful among the wreath styles presented. The subtle glimmer of candles perfectly match the subtle design of wreaths. Although, such a wreath is also tricky to create, since you have to make room for the candles and the candle holders. You should also apply some fireproofing to avoid disaster come the holiday season.

    Materials Used:

    • artificial evergreen wreath base
    • pliers
    • 2 small candle holders
    • 2 thin candles
    • craft wire
    • tiny ornaments
    • fire retardant
    • matches/lighter
    • hook

    Procedure:

  • Purchase a large artificial evergreen wreath base from a store for Christmas decorations. Buy a thin candle and its corresponding candle holder from a candle shop. Finally, go to a hardware store and purchase a can of fire retardant.
  • Plot the locations of the candles on the wreath base.
  • Bend the fibers of the base with your pliers to create a space for the candle and the candle holder.
  • Use craft wire to tie the candle holder to the bottom portion of the candle openings you made.
  • Tie the tiny ornaments around the base with craft wire.
  • Spray the entire wreath with fire retardant.
  • Let the fireproofing solution settle for a few minutes, then place the candles in the candle holders.
  • Attach the hook into a wall or door.
  • Hang the wreath and light the candles.
  • Feather Wreath

Making a feather wreath is similar to creating the autumn leaves wreath. You have to cover the wreath base with feathers and attach them with a glue gun. The accompanying ornaments are arranged then glued on the base as well. When the glue dries, you can hang your wreath on a visible corner of your home.

    Garden Hose Wreath

Artists are known to deviate from normal things and build similar creations using unconventional materials. The garden hose wreath falls in that category, since the most of its materials are foreign from the traditional wreaths. If you want to make a unique Christmas statement, you might as well make this type of wreath.

    Materials Used:

    • cutter
    • measuring tape
    • garden hose
    • gauge wire
    • tiny ornaments
    • dried flowers
    • hook

    Procedure:

  • Measure about 72 inches of your garden hose.
  • Cut the hose with your cutter.
  • Wrap the hose around until it forms a 24-inch diameter, then tie its ends together.
  • Wrap the hose with gauge wire so that the wreath will hold together.
  • Tie the flowers and ornaments to the gauge wire. Use separate strips of wire if necessary.
  • Setup the hook, then hang the garden hose wreath.
  • Christmas wreaths are norms when it comes to decorating for Christmas. Since they exude much class and elegance, you can hang them for the entire year and they will still look okay. These fine decorations can make you experience the Christmas spirit all year long as long as they remain hanging in your home.
