How to Make Stained Glass
Stained glass is chiefly responsible for making churches look more solemn and giving rooms a nice classical design. The classic effect produced comes from the way the figures are etched on a glass surface. Stained glass makers use a plethora of cutting and mending tools, and glass of different colors to create the ancient art form. Much precision is required, if you want to make an exceptional piece.
It’s a Precise Art
When creating stained glass, you must have steady hands. Errors are not easy to modify or erase, since glass is a brittle material and too much tapering may wreck the entire piece. If you are a beginner, you must first before proceeding to the real things. Making too many mistakes can prove to be costly, given the prices of glass and the other materials.
Safety Precaution
Before you start creating stained glass, you should wear a set of safety gear. The cutting materials and chipped glass are pretty sharp. The soldering iron, when powered, can easily burn your hands. Some of the solutions used are known skin irritants. You wouldn’t want to get hurt while creating your masterpiece, so better stick to the safety standards. Wear gloves, safety goggles and other safety gear that you deem necessary.
Materials Used:
- stained glass (different colors)
- soldering iron
- solder
- glass cutter
- cutter oil
- copper foil
- breaker-grozier pliers
- glass grinder
- glass marker
- copper foil
- cutting board/cutting square
- flux
- flux brush
- glass cleaner
- antique patina
Procedure:
- Make or look for a good pattern for stained glass.
- Create several different-shaped sections on your pattern. Assign colors and customize the shapes of each section.
- If you are satisfied with the design, label all the sections to avoid confusion.
- Go to a stained glass store and purchase all of the materials that you don’t have. For the cutting board, you can just use plywood, if you are cutting costs.
- Wear all the safety gear that you need before you start.
- Refer to the design you made awhile ago, then draw the patterns on the pieces of glass with your glass marker.
- Place the glass pieces on the cutting board. Cut them according to your design.
- Use the glass cutter to create a cutting line for the glass.
- Break the glass using the breaker grozier pliers.
- When the glass has been cut, grind the pieces with the glass grinder. Smooth and shape the pieces carefully so that they will fit, when joined together.
- Put the glass pieces together to form your design, then wrap the outer edges with copper paper.
- Apply flux on the glass.
- Use the solder and soldering iron to permanently join each of the pieces together.
- Clean your work with glass cleaner.
- If you want your piece to look like an antique, apply some antique patina. Make sure that your gloves are worn during this step because the patina solution is highly corrosive.
Once you master the art of making stained glass, you can apply it when designing your home or setting a theme for your room. The artwork is mysterious and eye-catching, creating a slightly Gothic impression on the room that occupies it. Create multiple stained glass pieces for your room and stand to get enchanted.
