How to Make Birthday Invitations
A birthday happens only once a year, making it a momentous occasion for everyone. Such an event requires careful preparation so that the entire celebration will be special for both the celebrant and the guests. An important element of a birthday party is the birthday invitation. A well-made invitation gives its recipient a clear idea on what they should know and expect from the celebration.
Three Types of Birthday Invitations
Birthday invitations differ, depending on the party’s theme or the age of the celebrant. To narrow down things, let’s classify the invitation under three main categories:
- Kids Party Invitations
- Adult Birthday Invitations
- Debut Party Invitations
Kids Party Invitations
Invitations for kiddie parties should cater to both kids and parents. The designs and the wording of the invitation is based on the common interests of children. The necessary party invitation wording should be clearly indicated so that parents can duly prepare their kids for the celebration.
Kids Party Invitation Template Wording
- Kiddie designs (cover and/or borders)
- Name of the celebrant with the corresponding birthday theme (ex. John Doe’s Under the Sea Party)
- Celebrant’s age and the formal invitation (ex. John is turning three and you are invited.)
- Important information about the celebration (ex. Saturday July 30, 2008 3-5 PM 20 Parkway Place, California. Attire: beachwear)
- envelope (the name of the recipient should be written in front)
When making the invitation, you should keep in mind the theme of the celebration. The designs, borders and even the font used for the invitation must match the theme. The invitation’s recipient will be obliged to conform to the theme of the birthday party. As for the kids, they will be excited about the whole event upon seeing the invitation.
Optional Elements
- scheduled list of activities
- food served during the celebration
The invitation can also have a scheduled list of activities to give parents enough time to prepare their kids for each activity. Remember, some kids are hard to handle when they get excited. Parents may need some time to properly discipline their kids to follow each activity.
A food list will come in handy, especially for kids who have allergies. The parents can view the list and spot any allergy-causing item. They can then inform the event organizers, so that they can get good replacement meals.
Making a Kids Birthday Invitation
You have the option to make the invitation using paper, a pen and coloring materials but you may find it tiring, especially if your kid has many guests. Instead, you can use your computer to make multiple copies of the invitation. Just follow the given format (see General Elements of a Kiddie Part Invitation) and you should have no trouble making dozens of invitations.
Materials Used
- bond paper
- computer
- printer
- word processing software

Easier Alternative
A good alternative is to print ready-made invitations on the Intenet. The selection may be limited, but it will save you valuable time and effort.
Procedure:
Adult Birthday Invitations
Adult invitations are normally more plain than their kiddie counterparts. They can come as formal invites, e-mail, or mobile phone messages. The only real messages conveyed by such invitations are the location, theme, date and time, attire, and a map. The rest is entirely up to your creativity. You can even inform your guests about your celebration through “word-of-mouth” passing of information, if you are not really in the mood to make an invitation.
Adult Birthday Invitation Template Wording
- Name of the Celebrant (ex. Paul’s 27th Birthday Celebration)
- Date and Time
- Venue/Address of the Celebration
- Dress Code
- RSVP info.
Debut Invitations
The debut invitation is the most stylish among the three main categories. It is often made of elegant paper with nice borders and intricate designs. Parents of debutants usually order customized invitations from debut or wedding planners since this type is the most difficult to create among the three.
Instead of creating debut invitations, the parents of the debutant simply choose among the designs presented to them by the debut planner or professional invitation maker. They can also customize the contents, designs, patterns, and the scent of the invites. The information about the celebration and the guests is simply relayed to the invitation maker.
Debut Invitation Template Wording
- Name of the Recipient
- Name of the Celebrant
- Name of the Celebrant (ex. Jennifer’s 18th Birthday Celebration)
- Date and Time
- Venue/Address of the Celebration
- Dress Code
- RSVP info.
- Program
- *18 roses (persons involved)
- *18 candles (persons involved)
- *18 treasures ((persons involved)
The marked items ( * ) are interchangeable with other items such as gifts, shots of alcohol or any form chosen by the debutant. The order of these of those ceremonies can also differ depending on the theme of the debut.
The invite is an important element of a birthday party. Make sure that all the copies are identical and well-created. Remember, a guest can readily judge your celebration by simply looking at his or her invitation. You might as well make a good impression starting with the invites.
