How To Make A Butterfly Costume
Posted on April 20th, 2008Have you seen how butterflies sparkle wonderfully as they flutter by? Such a magical sight has moved artists from all corners of the world and has made certain places famous. A butterfly has always been a symbol of how beautiful life really is and you can bring that inspiring symbol along to a costume party if you dress yourself as a butterfly. Who knows, you might even inspire even the harshest of judges to give you the best costume award if you make your costume well.
“Scary” is so Last Summer
The butterfly is a good getaway from all the scary costumes that characterize Halloween parties. Instead of frightening little kids, your job is to actually charm everyone with the colorful details of your costume. You will walk from one corner to another as you show everyone your elegant pair of wings. You will even stand out from any costume party since almost everyone is into scary costume.
Just a Few Reminders
The butterfly costume involves a lot of materials and involves many building steps that require careful concentration. To make your costume effective, you should focus on the small details that make the butterfly such an elegant creature. You will need unconventional items like poster boards, Christmas garlands, glitter and pipe cleaners for your costume. You will also need to construct the costume components with precision, or your butterfly costume will fall apart even before you get to the costume party..
Materials Used:
- 2 poster boards (4 x 4 ft)
- 2 Christmas garlands
- headband
- 2 pipe cleaners
- black tights
- black leotard
- 2 elastic bands (wrist size)
- scissors
- super glue
- bag of glitters
- paint
- paintbrush
- stapler
- pencil
- marker
- yellow slip-ons
- black sunglasses
Collect All the Materials for Your Costume
Your first stop is a bookstore, where you will purchase the poser boards, glitter, a painting kit, stapler, pencil, super glue, scissors and marker. Now, you can visit the women’s section of a shopping mall to purchase the elastic bracelets, slip-ons, leotard, tights and headband. Make sure that the leotard and the tights hug your body completely so that your costume will have a more realistic feel. Once done, go to a hardware store to get a pair of pipe cleaners then to a Christmas ornament shop for a couple of colorful Christmas garlands.
Butterfly Wings
Cut the two poster boards to form your pair of butterfly wings. Remember to make the top portions of the wings more prominent than the lower ones. Refer to the internet or animal books if you cannot remember the exact shape of a butterfly’s wings. When you have successfully formed both wings, use your stapler to affix the Christmas garlands to the outer edges of your butterfly wings. Draw the butterfly patterns on the garlands with your pencil then outline the lines using your marker. Once done, color the butterfly patterns with your painting equipment to make your wings look elegant. Staple the elastic bands to the top portion of each wing so that you will be able to flap your butterfly wings when you wear the costume. Now, sprinkle your wings with glitters for a little sparkle.
Butterfly Antenna
Get a pair of pipe cleaners and curl them to recreate a pair of butterfly’s antennae. Once done, twist the pipe cleaners around a headband. Color the headband and the pipe cleaners with black paint to boost the sense of realism.
Black and Yellow
Wear a black tight-fitting leotard along with a pair of black tights. Now, cover both articles of clothing with glitter to give the butterfly body a nice subtle glimmer. Wear a pair of yellow of slip-ons so that your costume will have a good color combination. To finish things off, wear a pair of dark sunglasses for your costume’s large butterfly eyes.
At this point, you can wear your costume’s wings and antennae then look yourself in the mirror. You will be amazed with the balance of stylishness and silliness that your costume brings. You may even start a brand new fashion statement if a few eccentric fashion designers see your flutter around with your sparkling costume.
