How To Make A Kitten Costume

Posted on April 16th, 2008

All of your friends know that you are a supreme cat lover. You own six fat cats and you spend most of your free time cuddling and playing with them. All of them respond to your hand signals as you motion them to come over. Halloween is just around the corner and you seem to have found the perfect costume that will typify your character. You want to come in a kitten costume to show your peers how much you truly love your cats. It’s a good thing that a kitten costume is easy to make.

The kitten costume is a getaway from all the scary costumes and impressions done for Halloween. Your primary objective when you create a kitten costume is to boost its cutesy factor. In place of the standard blood and gore of regular Halloween costumes, your kitten costume will be characterized by its nicely colored fur, cute long tail and its set of whiskers. You will probably charm every attendant at the Halloween party, including Dracula and the wolfman, if you manage to create your costume flawlessly.

Materials Used:

  • fluffy cotton fabric (3 x 3 meters)
  • foam stuffing
  • pink cotton fabric (2 x 2 meters)
  • needle
  • cardboard (1 x 1 ft)
  • masking tape
  • sewing thread
  • scissors
  • cat’s eye contact lenses
  • zipper
  • tape measure
  • sewing machine
  • marker
  • pencil
  • paper

First, go to a cloth shop and check out the section for fluffy fabrics. Single out the fabrics with cat-like patterns, and then select the fabric that resembles your favorite cat the closest. Get a pink 2 x 2 meter cotton sheet that will later become your kitten costume’s paw pads. When you have purchased both types of fabric, go to a needlework store and buy the foam stuffing, zipper and sewing equipment. Head on to an eye-care center afterwards and get contact lenses that are styled like a cat’s pair of eyes.

When the materials are ready, get the measurements for your face and body. These measurements will act as the dimensions of your kitten costume. Sketch a model of your costume on a piece of paper then write down all the dimensions on their corresponding places. This sheet of paper will serve as your point of reference for the entire project.

The Kitten Mask

Now that all of the preparations are done, you can start with the kitten mask. Outline the kitten mask’s design on your fabric with a marker. Check your reference sheet so the mask outline will have the correct dimensions. Once done, cut out the mask and have your sewing equipment ready. Make the nose and mouth region of your mask point forward slightly. Sew a strip of cardboard underneath the protruding region to make the snout of your costume permanent. Punch six holes on each side of the snout then slide a nylon string through each hole. When you’re done, tape the ends of each string to the cardboard so that your costume’s whiskers will stay in place. Make sure that each string is a bit stretched so that the whiskers will stand completely upright.

Create two openings in the eye region and a couple of smaller openings in the snout. At the tip of the snout, sew a small strip of pink fabric to recreate the kitten’s nose. Cut two 2-inch strips from your supply of fluffy fabric. Insert foam stuffing inside each strip then sew a sheet of pink fabric on the front portion of both strips. Once completed, sew the fluffy strips to the top portion of your mask. Those strips will be the kitten mask’s ears.

The Kitten Body Suit

Cut the outline of your kitten suit from your supply of fluffy cotton. Sew the ends of the cloth together to enclose your kitten costume. Once done, affix a sheet of pink fabric to the belly area, but keep the top portion open for now. Slide in some stuffing to give your costume a cute kitty belly then sew the top portion of the pink fabric shut.

Now that you have completed the belly, your next target is the kitten’s paws. Arrange five patches of pink fabric on the hand area of your costume. Make sure that they are assembled just like the pads on a kitten’s foot. Once done, sew the patches partially then stuff each pad with a thin layer of foam. You can now sew all the patches closed to finish one paw in your costume. Repeat the entire process until your costume has four kitten paws.

Your kitten costume is almost finished at this point. The only thing left to do is your costume’s tail. Draw the outline of the tail on the fluffy fabric. Ideally, your costume’s tail should be an arm’s length and an inch wide, but of course, the tail’s dimensions are entirely up to you. Once the tail has been outlined on the fabric, cut it out and sew its ends together. Stuff it with foam then sew it to the rump of your kitten costume.

At this point, your kitten costume is finished. You can now hop around and rub against people’s legs in the upcoming Halloween party. Be sure to mutter a sweet-sounding meow whenever you brush against the legs of your crushes.
