You are hungry after several hours of manual labor. You sit down for lunch at your dining room table. For several minutes, you stare at your table’s dull wooden surface. The cracks are quite noticeable and so are the stains that came from your previous meals. Eventually, you lose your appetite from what you just have seen. You need a tablecloth to preserve your appetite and promote the correct setting for eating. You could actually make one if you are so inclined.

A tablecloth is the covering placed on a dining table. A tablecloth comes in different designs that aim to marry the modern setting to the concept of formal dining. You have the option to create the tablecloth from scratch or you can simply order a pre-made cloth then affix cloth locks to finish your tablecloth. You can also patch up used items such as clothing, bed sheets or pillow cases to create your own tablecloth. Whatever the case, you will get a table item that meets all of your dining standards.

Materials Used:

  • fabric (3 x 3 meters)
  • scissors
  • needle
  • sewing thread
  • cotton thread (24 rolls)
  • pencil
  • tape measure
  • flat iron
  • ironing board
  • sewing machine (optional)

Table Dimensions and Materials

Ideally, the measurement of your tablecloth should be five or six inches longer than the dimensions of your dining table surface. Get the measurement of your table surface then go to a cloth store. Check out the different types of fabrics and designs then select the one that best suits the theme of your dining area. After you purchase the fabric, head over to a sewing store and get all the sewing equipment that you need.

Create Your Tablecloth

Now that you have all the materials, you can begin this do-it-yourself project. Cut the fabric to the measurement of your dining table surface. Get your sewing equipment and create a hemline near the edge of tablecloth. If you have a sewing machine, you can practically do this step in less than five minutes. Once done, you can stitch a few patterns on the tablecloth with your needle and thread.

The Finishing Touches

Get your cotton spools and fold them to form frizzles until you have enough to surround your tablecloth. Spread the frizzles around the tablecloth then stitch them below the hemline. Once done, set your tablecloth on an ironing board then press it with a flat iron. Be mindful of the type of fabric that you chose for your tablecloth when ironing because some fabrics burn rather easily. Set the temperature of the iron in accordance to the fabric of your tablecloth then fire away at all the wrinkles.

When you are done, set your tablecloth on your dining table and savor a good meal after. Be pleased for you will never have to see the truth behind your dining table ever again. Bon Appetit!
