How To Make A Scarecrow Costume

Posted on March 31st, 2008

Ask a kid about a scarecrow and you’ll probably see him shudder at the mere thought of such a scary farm monster. From a distance, the scarecrow looks like a hunter who is waiting for its curious prey to come closer and take a look. Its bent body seems like it can come to life at any second and terrorize crows and cheerful folk. Scary isn’t it? You can actually take advantage of the scarecrow’s notorious appearance and reputation by showing up as one at your next costume party. Watch your friends cry out like little kids once you chase them with your self-made scarecrow costume.

A scarecrow is known for its straw-based body and its farmer’s clothes. To capture a bit more realism to the figure, farmers give scarecrows distorted human faces. This causes the scarecrow to look scary for both crows and humans, which makes the scarecrow a very good inspiration for Halloween costumes. If you religiously copy a scarecrow down to the last detail, you’ll be as scary as any scarecrow that you have ever encountered.

A scarecrow costume can be pretty tedious to create but you will not be disappointed with the end results if you made it properly. You will need to stick straws to the appropriate fabric, including your makeshift scarecrow mask. Also, you will need to make sure that the scarecrow’s crooked face holds up despite the rather slippery surface of straw.

Materials Used:

  • straws (enough to cover your face and upper body)
  • overalls
  • bonnet
  • scissors
  • brown boots
  • straw hat
  • craft glue
  • buttons (two small and one large)
  • long sleeved shirt
  • yellow gloves
  • sewing equipment
  • yellow clothes dye
  • pitchfork

Scarecrow’s Upper Body

To start off with your scarecrow costume, you have to first gather a significant amount of straw from a barn. Apply craft glue all over a long sleeved shirt, and then stick the straw to it. The shirt should be completely covered with straw so that its original color will not be visible. Once the glue dries, check if the straw is stuck to the shirt. If some of the straw falls, you can use your sewing equipment to saw those straws back in place.

Scarecrow’s Face

The next step is to recreate the scarecrow’s crooked face. Get a bonnet and cut out openings for your eyes and nose. Dye the bonnet accordingly with the use of yellow clothes dye. When the dye settles, sew a couple of small identical buttons above the bonnet’s pair of eye openings. Proceed to sew a larger button above the opening for your nose then place stitches on the lower portion of the bonnet, which will form your scarecrow mask’s mouth. Once done, cut a good clump of 1-inch straw then stick it to the bonnet with the use of craft glue. Your scarecrow mask is ready when the glue dries.

Scarecrow’s Attire

Now, you can wear the bonnet and the long sleeved shirt if they are ready. Wear a straw hat, a pair of old brown boots and a pair of overalls to give the impression that your scarecrow costume just came out of a barn. If you do not have a straw hat and a pair of overalls, a visit to the department store will take care of your troubles. When you’re all set, grab a pitchfork and make your way towards your costume party. Make sure that you’ll be bringing your own automobile to the party, unless you want to make your own urban legend in your town as well.

The scarecrow costume looks pretty scary. Always remember not to look in the mirror while you wear your scarecrow costume; otherwise be prepared for several nightmares.
