How To Make A Chair
After tiring yourself out, nothing feels better than sitting on a chair. A chair’s comfortable surface is always a welcome feeling. A lot of daily activities actually come with a chair. Imagine eating a heavy breakfast without sitting on a chair; that would be as odd as it is uncomfortable. The same goes with doing office work and getting a haircut. To make your daily life more comfortable, you can always make your own chairs. You can even make designated chairs for every daily activity if you want.
Chairs come in various designs. They are often stylized to match the theme of a room or the entire house. Before you create chairs, you should take note of their theme and the theme of their projected location. You would not want to have chairs that are like oddly-placed accessories in your wardrobe. They should always jive with the setting.
Chairs are made from various materials such as wood, plastic and metal. Each material appeals to a distinct theme. You should know what material to use when thinking about the theme of your chair. Not all materials will look good given a particular design. You should see which chair material suits your theme best.
Wooden Chair
The wooden chair perfectly fits brown-colored and nature-inspired settings. Its wooden body can blend well with antiques and can also set the theme of verandas. It is the most versatile among the three major chair types. Normally, wooden chairs are quite expensive especially if they are made with hardwood. Then again, you would not worry too much about their price if you made your own set of wooden chairs.
Materials Used:
- wooden sheets (medium density)
- 4 wooden pegs
- saw
- chisel
- hammer
- nails
- plastic film
First, saw off a medium-sized square from a wooden sheet and chisel off the excess amount of wood. This square will be your chair’s surface. Get the four wooden pegs and use the chisel if you want to make impressions on the legs of your chair. When you are done tweaking the four pegs, nail them to each of the ends of the chair’s surface. You can test how the legs hold up the surface before proceeding.
After building its surface and its legs, your next target is the chair’s backrest. The backrest may not be as important as the chair’s legs or surface but it carries the brunt of the chair’s design. You should carefully plan the theme of the chair’s backrest. If you have a background in carving, it is a definite advantage. You can also use other items such as woven wicker to highlight the backrest.
When you have chosen a theme for your backrest, cut out a rectangle from your wooden sheet. Use your chisel to properly mold your backrest and to apply your selected theme. Once done, you can nail the backrest to the back of the chair’s surface. You now have only one chair component to make, the armrests.
To create the armrests, saw two arm-length planks and four shorter planks from your wooden sheet. Pair up the four planks and then nail a pair beneath each arm-length plank. Now, nail the armrests on each side of the chair’s surface. If you want to further stylize your chair, you can carve impressions on each armrest with the use of your chisel. Laminate your completed chair with a protective coat it to give it a nice sheen and a protective coating.
At this point, you have successfully completed a wooden chair. You can rest easy for now and sit comfortably on your new chair.
Plastic Chair
The plastic chair best suits a modern setting. Usually, plastic chairs are molded to suit the fanciest bars and modern homes. They often come with sleek designs aimed to please the eyes. If you can call your room anything but classic, then the plastic chair may be your best option.
Materials Used:
- plastic strip
- chair mold
- boiler
- internet access
- metal lining
- adhesive
- cleaning solution
To create your plastic chair, your first step is to think of a theme that would suit your home. Observe the location where the plastic chair is going to be situated and carefully observe its theme. The plastic chair is known for having a ton of possible designs, which is why you can consult showroom websites on the internet for ideas. If you think that a certain design seems impossible to create, think again. The secret behind every plastic chair is the chair mold. If you have the proper mold of a particular chair design, you can build it in no time.
Once you have selected a design and got the chair mold for it, you can start creating your plastic chair. Get an ample amount of plastic strips and place them inside the boiler. When the plastic strips melt, transfer them to the chair mold. Wait for the plastic to harden then affix the metal lining beneath the seat using metal adhesive.
To give your chair a good gleam, you can apply some cleaning solution. A cleaning solution not only makes your chair shine, but also gives your chair a protective coating. It can protect your chair from sudden temperature changes and from becoming brittle. It can always come in handy, which is why it is essential that you have one of those.
Now, you have your new plastic chair. It is your call at this point if you want to sit on it or turn it into a home fashion accessory. Whichever you choose, the plastic chair works well both ways anyway.
Metal Chair
Metal chairs suit classically styled homes and also look good on marble flooring. Since they suit some of the most luxurious places, metal chairs are the most expensive among the three main types of chairs. However, you can make a set of metal chairs without shelling out too much cash.
Materials Used:
- metal strips
- metal boiler
- chair molds (armrests, legs, surface, backrest)
- forge and hammer
- welding equipment
- chisel
- metal cleaning solution
- cushion
- nuts and bolts
- mechanical drill
To tell you the truth, the metal chair is probably the most time consuming to make among the three main chair types. Most metal chairs bear intricate patterns that may not be found in most chair molds. Chair manufacturers sometimes do the intricate patterns manually with the use of a hammer, a chisel and a forge. Tedious as that process may seem, you can do it yourself if you have a steady hand. Of course, you can always pay a smithy a visit if things get too rough.
To start things off, you can first get several metal strips and place them inside a metal boiler. Set the temperature to over a thousand degrees Celsius just to make sure that the metal thoroughly melts. Once done, transfer the molten metal to the chair molds. Remove any excess liquid since it can ruin the overall appearance of your metal chair.
When the metal is a bit hard, transfer it to the forge then create your own patterns using your hammer and chisel. Be sure that you have a guide when doing this because a slight miscalculation can ruin your theme. You can hire the services of a professional if you made a few errors. He or she can surely adjust those errors or make those errors look tolerable.
When you are done with the metal carving stage, you can weld together the different components of your chair. You can now apply some cleaning solution to your metal chair to give it a nice sheen. The metal cleaning solution also gives a protective coat to your chair, which can reinforce its durability.
The final step is affixing the cushions on the seat and the backrest. You can drill holes through your back rest then attach the backrest cushion with your set of nuts and bolts. As for the seat cushion, you can simply place it on the seat and tie it at the back of the seating surface. You now have a new gleaming metal chair. Get ready to lounge around.
Chairs can be hard to create but you will certainly be rewarded for your efforts.
