How To Make A Birdhouse
by howtomakestuff Posted on March 23rd, 2008Birds are known to take trees as shelter, but pet birds have a different item that they willingly call home: birdhouses. Birdhouses are makeshift nest representations made of various items. These types of avian shelters are often purchased or created by the owners of pet birds.
Birdhouses are preferred by pet birds because they are more convenient than the nests birds themselves create. They are also better than bird cages since birdhouses do not really treat birds as captives. Birds can fly in and out of the birdhouse whenever they want.
A birdhouse can be built out of various materials. Some birdhouses look like tiny houses, while others are as simple as hollow logs that have everything a bird needs for its daily life. Bearing nest-like properties, a usual birdhouse has a feeding area, a storage area and a sleeping area. It is also kept open so that birds are free to fly around the area to hone their hunting skills and to exercise.
Though it requires some work, building a birdhouse is rather simple. You will only need basic carpentry skills and a small supply of wood to build one. You can choose to build the popular “tiny home” version of the birdhouse, which closely resembles a human home, but it is quite small for all the needs of your pet birds.
Instead, you can build a hollow log birdhouse. The hollow log birdhouse has enough room to contain all the required areas of a birdhouse, plus it has a lot of space for your bird to move freely inside. You can probably call it the underground bird’s nest since the hollow log birdhouse looks like a fattened tree branch.
Materials Used:
- cedar branch (8 inches in width)
- mechanical drill with paddle head
- nails
- hammer
- rope or sturdy string
- twigs and straw bits
- metal hook
- hand saw
To build your hollow log birdhouse, you must first get a cedar branch that is ideally eight inches in width. The length of the branch is relative, depending on the number and size of your pet birds.
Empty out the log until it becomes completely hollow using your mechanical drill and a paddle head. You can even out the rough edges with your chisel. To make things easier, you can saw the log in half then glue them back together when you have hollowed each half.
Make two or three holes in the top portion of your birdhouse so that your pet birds will have hatches that serve as entrance and exit points. To hang your birdhouse, tie each end of the log with rope or sturdy string and nail the strings to the top portion of the log. Install a couple of metal hooks on the roof of your home then hang the strings on each hook.
The final step is creating the interior of your birdhouse. Arrange a collection of wooden straw bits and twigs in one section of the birdhouse that will serve as the makeshift nest or the rest area. Designate a separate area for the bird’s feeding area. You can place a feeding dish and a water container in that space.
As for the storage area, consider it taken care of by your own pet birds. If you look closely at a bird’s nest, you will notice that birds are quite organized when they stack wood bits and meals for storage. Your pet birds will have no problems creating the storage area themselves.
Now, you can rest easy and watch your pet birds enjoy the hollow log birdhouse made by your own two hands. You can say that you have just given your birds a touch of human warmth that is rarely found in the animal kingdom. Your pets will think of you as a caring older sibling, regardless of the difference in specie.
