How To Make A Pond
by howtomakestuff Posted on March 17th, 2008Dark, mysterious, and murky, ponds have always been depicted as homes to mysterious creatures in a lot of folktales and fantasy stories. Filled with lily pods and toads, ponds are just as enchanting as the creatures that they supposedly hold.
Walking by a pond can give you a creepy feeling as you hear the chorus of crickets and see the water move for seemingly no apparent reason. If you are a lover of fantasy stories and legends, the pond comes as a welcome addition to your property. A pond may be hard to build, but it can make your fantasies come true if you have enough wit and resourcefulness.
Having a pond on your property can create a theme or highlight a jungle-themed garden. Its appearance displays natural beauty as it complements the trees and shrubs of your garden. You can place the pond in the center of your garden with a wooden bridge or place it in an obscure corner.
Sight for a Site
To build a pond for your property, you must first select the proper location for your pond. Remember that a pond is a healthy ecosystem where many plants and animals coexist. If you place the pond near your house, you might find a few bullfrogs and dragonflies running amuck in your living room. You should install your pond several meters away from your home so that the ecosystem that goes along with the pond will flourish.
Digging Deep
After selecting the site where you will build your pond, you will need to do some digging. The depth of your pond should be relative to the size of your pond. Ideally, small ponds do not require great depths since they do not hold many creatures. Larger ponds, on the other hand, may require a depth of about 15 – 20 feet to give enough space for the numerous fishes, frogs, and other organisms.
The Piping Labyrinth
Once you have dug your pond, you can hire a plumber to create a piping system for your pond. The piping system will allow you to drain, clean and refill your pond with fresh water. If you have a lot of knowledge about pipes and you can build piping systems, you can do it yourself. However, you can still consult one just in case since he or she knows better methods of installing a pond piping system.
Playing the Pond God
Keep in mind that you are building a thriving ecosystem along with the pond. A good combination of creatures, plants and overall pond maintenance will make your pond healthy and beautiful. When the piping system has been installed, fill up your pond with water. Scatter several lily pods throughout the pond. Purchase a few pond fishes and frogs and place them in their appropriate areas in the pond. Once you have successfully built the pond ecosystem, you will have a pond bustling with wildlife.
When you finally finish building your pond, you can start creating your own fantasy story as you ponder around the area. You can imagine magical creatures inhabiting your pond. You can even envision imagined cities and civilizations.
