How To Make A Jack O’ Lantern Costume

Posted on March 17th, 2008

The Jack O’ Lantern is a mad creature said to roam streets and avenues during Halloween as it frightens all the kids that dare cross its path. The Jack O’ Lantern is famous for his pumpkin head, his green trench coat, his straw hat and the old lantern that he carries everywhere. He terrorizes people in storybooks and his image can be your ticket to having the creepiest costume at the next costume party. If your friends think that there is nothing scary about giant pumpkins, watch them scream out the names of saints as they see you in your Jack O’ Lantern costume.

A Jack O’ Lantern costume is a makeshift representation of the legendary creature. It should bare all of the scary characteristics of the Jack O’ Lantern, with the pumpkin head, lantern and all. To create your own Jack O’ Lantern costume, you should be armed with some precision and lots of patience. The costume may not be very comfortable to wear but it will assuredly win you the best costume award at a your next Halloween party.

Materials Used:

  • very large pumpkin (can fit your head)
  • green trench coat
  • orange leggings
  • orange shoes
  • orange make-up or body paint
  • orange art paper
  • old lantern
  • cutter
  • black marker
  • tape

To create a Jack O’ Lantern costume, you first have to design the pumpkin head. Get a giant pumpkin then cut a hole large enough to fit your head. Empty out the contents of the pumpkin, leaving only its tough exterior. Using the cutter, you can now carve the haunting face of the Jack O’ Lantern on the pumpkin’s exterior. Use the black marker to highlight the mask’s facial features to make it look really creepy.

Now, you can test how scary your pumpkin head is by switching the lights off and placing a candle inside the mask. If you squeal like an agitated mouse, then your pumpkin head is ready.

The next step is to create the garb and body of Jack O’ Lantern. Since you have completed the pumpkin head at this point, everything will now come easily. Wear a green old-style trench coat and match it with a pair of orange leggings. Cover all the exposed parts of your body with orange make-up or body paint to make yourself look like a mutated pumpkin humanoid. Now, get the orange art paper and create pointed curves. Stick the orange paper curves in front of your shoes to recreate Jack’s pointed shoes.

Now that you have completed the entire Jack O’ Lantern wardrobe, we can now move on to the last item of the costume, the lantern. People normally think that any type of lantern will do, but those people overlook a very important detail: Jack O’ Lantern existed between the 17th and 18th centuries. The design of the lantern should look like it came from those centuries. Furthermore, making it look rusty works even better as it perfectly displays the supposed age of the lantern.

Once you grab a suitable lantern, you have completed your Jack O’ Lantern costume. If you are not totally satisfied with the costume’s overall scare factor, you could always add a few more details to make it every kid’s worst nightmare. You could hold a knife smeared with fake blood in your spare hand as you chase down everyone who makes the mistake of crossing your path.
