Kids have always looked up to Santa Claus as the official bringer of gifts during Christmas. He has to go through the same tiring routine of sliding down chimneys and look for a gift container inside every house. Let’s face it, Santa is not getting any younger and his patience is drawing shorter by the year.

He usually leaves kids without presents if they fail to hang a Christmas stocking. Surely, you would not want to deny yourself or your kids the chance to receive Santa’s goodies by not hanging one in your home. You might as well make one, given all the possibilities to create your own version of the Christmas stocking.

Making a Christmas stocking is pretty easy. In fact, it can be a better choice than actually purchasing one since the materials used to create a stocking are readily found in most homes. It is practically costless and takes only a little effort to make. With a little needlework and a pinch of creativity, you can have your own Christmas stocking in no time.

Materials Used:

  • a long strip of felt paper
  • any type of fabric
  • a piece of small decorative string
  • needle
  • embroidery thread
  • sequins
  • scissors
  • puncher
  • chalk

To create a makeshift Christmas stocking, you first get the strip of felt paper and draw the outline of your stocking. Cut out the outline then place it on top of the fabric sheet. Trace the outline of your Christmas stocking on the fabric using a piece of chalk, then cut the fabric accordingly. Repeat the entire outlining and cutting process on another part of the fabric to form the stocking’s second side.

Once you have both outlined fabric strips in hand, sew them together using embroidery thread. Remember to leave an opening on the top portion of your stocking so that gifts can be slipped inside. After sewing the strips of fabric together, you can stylize your stocking by sewing Christmas patterns on one side of your stocking.

Try looking at Christmas-themed embroidery patterns in embroidering books or on the Internet to give you a clearer picture on what design you should sew on your stocking. To make your stocking look more elegant, you can add a few strategically placed sequins to the mix of designs.

The last step is to attach a piece of decorative string to the Christmas stocking that will serve as the stocking’s wall-holder. Bore two holes through the top portion of your stocking using a puncher, then slide the string into both holes. Now, tie a knot on each end of the string to properly affix the string to the stocking. At this point, you have a beautiful Christmas stocking fit for any of Santa Claus’ gifts.

The Christmas stocking is not only a gift container; but also an elegant Christmas decoration that can highlight the corners of your home.

* Christmas stockings are lovely ornaments where Santa Claus can place small goodies for you, but if you’re afraid that your stocking won’t stand out from the others, you should add in your own delightful decorations. Here’s how to make personalized Christmas stockings.
