Holidays are special occasions held to commemorate a significant event or achievement. We welcome holidays with presents and celebrations, much to the enjoyment of everyone. These welcoming rituals can indeed highlight special occasions, but somehow, things aren’t complete without holiday cards. Consider yourself blessed if ever you receive one.

A holiday card is a cardboard-based greetings marked with a nifty one-liner and a nice colorful cover. Simple as it may sound, a holiday card is greatly appreciated by its recipients. The greetings found in these cards are very intimate and they can stand alone even without personal messages or presents. Holiday cards also offer a wide array of themes fit for every occasion and almost any type of situation. Some of the covered themes are Christmas, anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day.

The cover of a holiday card is characterized by beautiful pictures or illustrations. Made to please the eyes, the cover conveys a symbolic message that is equally strong as the card’s greeting. Christmas cards have covers that show Christmas trees or Santa Claus. Valentine’s Day cards display hearts or a couple holding hands. Evidently, the covers of holiday cards are the visual translations of its personal greetings.

It is fun to make holiday cards. In fact, a DIY holiday card might even be better than a store-bought holiday card since the messages that you are going to create will be more appropriate for the recipient. You can start things off by building your special message. Remember that the two avenues for conveying messages, the cover and the greeting, should always agree with each other.

You would not want to have a card that bears an “I’m going to miss you this holiday season” greeting with a cover that shows a very happy couple. Such a cover might confuse the recipient, instead of focusing on your true message. Think of a good image with the greeting as its perfect subtitle.

When you already have a message and a theme in mind, grab a sheet of cardboard and cut out an 8 ½” X 11” strip. Fold it in the middle to form the general shape of your card. For the cover, you have a truckload of options. You can make it a collage by cutting out words and pictures from magazines.

If you want to pursue a more traditional route, you can draw or paint an image. You can even use photo-enhancing software if you want to boost the aesthetics of your card’s cover. Do not get overboard with the design of your cover since it may overpower the card’s greeting.

Once you are done with the card’s cover, think of a striking greeting that perfectly suits your sentiments and the cover of your card. If you have trouble coming up with a good greeting, think about unforgettable lines from movies. You don’t have to go so low as to copy lines like, “You complete me!” Instead, you can just base your greeting from the sincerity and the impact of those lines. You will be touching lives by combining heartfelt statements with a little wordplay.

To make things more intimate, seal your card in an envelope. The envelope does not need to have bold designs for it, unless you add a simple detail that will make the recipients curious and excited about opening the envelope and seeing the card.

An often overlooked dimension of the envelope is that it can also act as the gift wrapper for small presents. Pendants, necklaces and other small jewelry work well with intimate holiday cards. You might as well slide the pendant inside the card, and then insert the whole thing inside the envelope. This adds more impact and drama, especially if the recipient is someone that you love. Surely, the recipient will find both you and your card unforgettable after giving such.

A holiday cards is a simple way to express the obligatory greetings of an occasion and your true feelings about its recipient. For all you know, you might be one holiday card away from being truly appreciated.
